Abstract:
In this work Doppler broadening positron annihilation spectroscopy was used to study the defects induced in Al, Mo and Nb metal samples by neutron irradiation up to 10 MeV. The neutron irradiation of samples was carried out with a 5 Ci AmBe neutron source for different periods from 35 days to 264 days. The neutron flux at the irradiation position was 3.3x105 n/cm2/sec. A 35 mCi Na22 was used as positron source. HPGe detector was used to study the Doppler broadening of the annihilation peak. S and W parameters were calculated for quantifying the defects induced by neutron irradiation. SEM measurements were carried out to observe the surface morphology of pristine and irradiated samples. SEM pictures revealed the substantial change in surface of irradiated samples then pristine samples. I-V characteristics of these samples were also studied and presented here to make a correlation with neutron irradiation. The present study shows that defects are increased with increasing neutron dose to the samples. This study of damage due to neutron irradiation is of great importance for accelerator driven sub-critical system for production of nuclear energy and nuclear fuel.
