Abstract: Peer teaching has turned out to be a revolutionary pedagogical tool that fosters active learning, teamwork and engagement with students in different learning environments. Peer teaching is of high opportunities in secondary education where cognitive, emotional and social development overlap giving the possibility to improve academic performance and interpersonal abilities. Nevertheless, along with theoretical and empirical benefits, there are numerous challenges and limitations of the practical implementation of peer teaching. This paper involves a review on the obstacles to the application of peer teaching in secondary education which includes poor subject knowledge of peer tutors, complexities in classroom management, unequal participation, time, assessment, and institutional constraints.
This study is conducted as a qualitative review-based research that synthesizes the results of the existing literature to determine the recurring problems and explain their impact on educational practice. Other aspects of effective peer teaching discussed in the paper include the psychological, pedagogical, and organizational aspects that play a role in determining the effectiveness of peer teaching. The results indicate that peer teaching is effective in motivating, improving communication abilities, and thinking, however, it requires, well-organized strategy, teacher facilitation, and training.
At the end of the study, a framework of successful implementation, with a focus on teacher supervision, curriculum integration, assessment innovation, and institutional support is proposed. These findings add to the accumulating knowledge on collaborative learning and offer effective suggestions to teachers, policy makers and researchers who want to maximize peer teaching in secondary schools.
